Xihan Chen studied chemistry at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (B.Sc., 2012) and completed his Ph.D. in chemistry at UC Berkeley in 2017, where he worked with Prof. Tanja Cuk on ultrafast spectroscopy of photocatalytic water oxidation at oxide–aqueous interfaces.
He then joined the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as a postdoctoral researcher in Matthew Beard's group, where he studied hot carrier cooling, surface recombination and spin-polarized transport in halide perovskites. Since 2021 he has led an independent group at SUSTech, combining interface-selective transient reflection, polarization-resolved pump–probe spectroscopy and in-situ electrochemical measurements.
The group's work has appeared in Science, Nature Catalysis, Nature Energy, Nature Photonics, Physical Review Letters, JACS, Joule and Energy & Environmental Science, with more than 9,000 citations and an h-index of 48.
